Same-Sex Attraction and the Developing Child: An Introduction

textbook reviewThe way a person views the development of same-sex attractions (SSA) greatly influences the way they understand and interpret those attractions, either in themselves or others. This naturally has a significant effect on public opinion as well. As a man coming from an SSA background, it is important to me that available evidence be examined in a truly objective and critical manner. It would be naive to think that the social, political, and cultural climate do not have an influence on what can be hypothesized, researched, or taught in public universities.

We’ve all had professors with particular social agendas that bleed into the course material and, even in my short time as a student of psychology, I have heard narrow-minded and partially-informed opinions about SSA presented in class as unarguable absolutes. These conclusions were in fact honestly drawn from evidence, though I would argue that not all available observations were taken into consideration, nor were the conclusions submitted to the same level of critical scrutiny that other studies typically are. However, I do believe that such professors are genuinely well-intentioned and motivated by a sense of compassion, which is much needed in regards to this topic.

As for having holes in our understanding, I think that if we are honest, we’ve all had moments where we have had to humbly adjust our views because of some pertinent pieces of information we had hitherto never been exposed to. That process is part and parcel for any student and really should be a part of the thinking of any adult living in our current Information Age, where it is estimated that all of human knowledge currently doubles every 1-2 years, and will double every 73 days by the year 2020. We must accept that psychology is a work in progress and, though the models we have now are good ones and the best that incredibly intelligent people have come up with, they may need adjustment as more is learned.

This being the case, I thought it would be of value to take a thoughtful look at what some current psychology textbooks have to say about SSA and sexual orientation. I believe this to be a good starting point to compare what different disciplines of psychology have to say on the topic and what research they reference to support their ideas. I will compare the evidence with the observations and theories regarding the development of SSA held by sexual orientation change effort (SOCE) therapists. In this series of articles I will take a close look at the following three textbooks.

Great Storms Announce Themselves with a Gentle Breeze: Pedophilia and Sexual Orientation

storm01It appears that a simple, small idea is just beginning to take root in the minds of a few professionals and a group of people that could usher in a new wave of rights for pedophiles. Take a look at the article below, and send it to your contacts, or to your state legislator, or the American Psychological Association, or our American president.

I will let the article speak for itself since the statements are alarming at best. However, in this post, I want to remind our readers that this path to pedophilia has begun in the exact same way the acceptance of homosexuality and gay marriage took root in the world over the past several decades. It all starts with one single, simple idea; that pedophilia is in-born and cannot be changed. That’s it; only one idea is necessary to change the course of civilization.

What’s that you say? Pedophilia could NEVER be accepted by a modern society! Never? Tell that to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Tell that to modern-day homosexual men and women who are now able to be legally married in many states and countries. They started with exactly the same simple idea. No other idea has built the strongest foundation of the gay agenda. Without this one idea, gay marriage, acceptance of pedophilia, and certainly a host of other “philias” would never succeed.

As usual, it is always the children of a society that will be hurt first and be hurt the most. If the ideas presented in this article will come to pass, it will be your children and your grandchildren who will suffer. What are you going to do about it?

IT BEGINS: PEDOPHILES CALL FOR SAME RIGHTS AS HOMOSEXUALS

Jul 25, 2013 218 Comments Toro520

Excerpted from the Northern Colorado Gazette:

Using the same tactics used by “gay” rights activists, pedophiles have begun to seek similar status arguing their desire for children is a sexual orientation no different than heterosexual or homosexuals.

Critics of the homosexual lifestyle have long claimed that once it became acceptable to identify homosexuality as simply an “alternative lifestyle” or sexual orientation, logically nothing would be off limits. “Gay” advocates have taken offense at such a position insisting this would never happen. However, psychiatrists are now beginning to advocate redefining pedophilia in the same way homosexuality was redefined several years ago.

In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. A group of psychiatrists with B4U-Act recently held a symposium proposing a new definition of pedophilia in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders of the APA.

B4U-Act  calls pedophiles “minor-attracted people.” The organization’s website states its purpose is to, “help mental health professionals learn more about attraction to minors and to consider the effects of stereotyping, stigma and fear.”

In 1998 The APA issued a report claiming “that the ‘negative potential’ of adult sex with children was ‘overstated’ and that ‘the vast majority of both men and women reported no negative sexual effects from  childhood sexual abuse experiences.”

Pedophilia has already been granted protected status by the Federal Government. The Matthew Shephard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act lists “sexual orientation” as a protected class; however, it does not define the term.

Republicans attempted to add an amendment specifying that “pedophilia is not covered as an orientation;” however, the amendment was defeated by Democrats. Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fl) stated that all alternative sexual lifestyles should be protected under the law. “This bill addresses our resolve to end violence based on prejudice and to guarantee that all Americans, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability or all of these ‘philias’ and fetishes and ‘isms’ that were put forward need not live in fear because of who they are. I urge my colleagues to vote in favor of this rule.”

The White House praised the bill saying, “At root, this isn’t just about our laws; this is about who we are as a people. This is about whether we value one another  – whether we embrace our differences rather than allowing them to become a source of animus.”

Earlier this year two psychologists in Canada declared that pedophilia is a sexual orientation just like homosexuality or heterosexuality.

Van Gijseghem, psychologist and retired professor of the University of Montreal, told members of Parliament, “Pedophiles are not simply people who commit a small offense from time to time but rather are grappling with what is equivalent to a sexual orientation just like another individual may be grappling with heterosexuality or even homosexuality.”

He went on to say, “True pedophiles have an exclusive preference for children, which is the same as having a sexual orientation. You cannot change this person’s sexual orientation. He may, however, remain abstinent.”

When asked if he should be comparing pedophiles to homosexuals, Van Gijseghem replied, “If, for instance, you were living in a society where heterosexuality is proscribed or prohibited and you were told that you had to get therapy to change your sexual orientation, you would probably say that that is slightly crazy. In other words, you would not accept that at all. I use this analogy to say that, yes indeed, pedophiles do not change their sexual orientation.”

Dr. Quinsey, professor emeritus of psychology at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, agreed with Van Gijseghem. Quinsey said pedophiles’ sexual interests prefer children and, “There is no evidence that this sort of preference can be changed through treatment or through anything else.”

In July, 2010 Harvard health Publications said, “Pedophilia is a sexual orientation and unlikely to change. Treatment aims to enable someone to resist acting on his sexual urges.”

Linda Harvey, of Mission America, said the push for pedophiles to have equal rights will become more and more common as LGBT groups continue to assert themselves. “It’s all part of a plan to introduce sex to children at younger and younger ages; to convince them that normal friendship is actually a sexual attraction.”

Milton Diamond, a University of Hawaii professor and director of the Pacific Center for Sex and Society, stated that child pornography could be beneficial to society because, “Potential sex offenders use child pornography as a substitute for sex against children.”

Diamond is a distinguished lecturer for the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco. The IASHS openly advocated for the repeal of the Revolutionary war ban on homosexuals serving in the military.

The IASHS lists, on its website, a list of “basic sexual rights” that includes “the right to engage in sexual acts or activities of any kind whatsoever, providing they do not involve nonconsensual acts, violence, constraint, coercion or fraud.” Another right is to, “be free of persecution, condemnation, discrimination, or societal intervention in private sexual behavior” and “the freedom of any sexual thought, fantasy or desire.” The organization also says that no one should be “disadvantaged because of  age.”

Sex offender laws protecting children have been challenged in several states including California, Georgia and Iowa. Sex offenders claim the laws prohibiting them from living near schools or parks are unfair because it penalizes them for life.

Ex-Gay Pride 2013: One Ex-Gay Is Enough

photo-25

Richard Cohen, Founder of the International Healing Foundation, speaks during Ex-Gay Pride 2013 with his wife Jae Sook.

July 31, 2013 was a great day for former homosexuals in America! While the turnout was humble, the enthusiasm among those who participated in Ex-Gay Pride was immeasurable. Anti-ex-gay extremists are gleeful that “less than ten people showed up”…actually, by my count, nine former homosexuals (including an ex-transgender) and a half-dozen more allies came out to lobby Congress and show support at the press conference in front of the Supreme Court. While that number may be small, we have to start somewhere.

But let’s imagine double that number showed up, or maybe 50, or perhaps even 100. Would that be enough? For anti-ex-gay extremists, it would not. In my view, it is significant in our current anti-ex-gay climate that even ONE former homosexual is willing to share their experience and speak out publicly. So why do activists make such a big deal over the numbers? The reason is because they want to make it seem like the only ex-gays who are vocal are a small group of profiteers that are fooling vulnerable individuals; in essence, they claim we are liars and charlatans that are misleading others.

But what they do not realize is that it only takes ONE ex-gay that has changed to put a wrench in the “born that way, cannot change” strategy they are using to deceive the public. The fact is, these activists cannot handle the existence of ONE person who says they have experienced change from same-sex attraction to opposite sex attraction, much less nine of us telling our stories at one time. So they need to mock, belittle, and downplay the significance of yesterday’s events. That is why there is so much anger. So much intimidation. So much disrespect. So much harassment.

As I commented in The Christian Post yesterday, the former homosexuals who speak out are heroes. They are subject to harassment, discrimination, marginalization, and defamation simply because they have pursued a path that not many others in their circumstances would have done – a road less traveled, so to speak. Unfortunately, not many people are celebrating their life and achievements. But they are heroes, and we should celebrate their lives and stories.

One of those heroes is Robin Goodspeed, an ex-lesbian who for the first time yesterday spoke publicly about leaving homosexuality. A resident of Wyoming, Robin does not run an ex-gay ministry, nor is she a therapist or political activist. In other words, she has nothing to gain by telling her story except the satisfaction of being true to herself. I got a chance to speak with her for a few minutes, and I believe she is a courageous woman who has defied all odds, despite a lack of support from the “tolerant” LGBT community in Oregon (where she previously lived) and Wyoming, who refuses to accept her experience and support her choice.

Yesterday, Robin felt at home with other like-minded ex-gays, and was able to Come Out Straight for the first time publicly and talk about her experiences as a lesbian, and now as an ex-gay pursuing heterosexuality. I was touched and inspired by her bravery! But for every Robin Goodspeed that tells her story, there is a thousand others who remain silent because of fear, intimidation, and shame. They remain in the closet and suffer in silence. My hope is that these individuals come to understand that there is a supportive, loving community who embraces them and that they need not fear rejection for speaking their truth.

There were many other highlights at yesterday’s events. Dozens of Congressional offices, Congressmen/women, and Senators were introduced to former homosexuals, possibly for the first time. We got the chance to educate lawmakers on the struggles that we as a group of people face. We also had a chance to speak to dozens of people who walked by the Supreme Court and stopped for a few minutes to hear our stories. This is very important, because it’s not likely that these folks would ever hear such accounts in the mainstream media, who regularly shuts us out and refuses to air our stories.

Speaking of the mainstream media, they predictably failed to show up, despite being sent multiple press releases. But the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) did show up, and they were gracious enough to invite me to share about Ex-Gay Pride during their 4:00pm Newswatch program on July 31. A Message from the Arab World: Ex-Gays are the Real Gays

t1larg.lebanon.gay.march.giBeing a survivor of the Middle East thirty years’ plus war, and a resident of the country of Lebanon with its intriguing combination of interesting colonial history, political unrest, and armed conflict, I can say I very well know what the word “terrorism” means. That said, never in my thunderous life had I encountered anything more horrific than the Ex-Gay-phobic LGBT-secular-extremists “guerrillas.”

They are brainwashed with deception, fooling everyone while claiming victim hood to gain acceptance, tolerance, justice, equality, marriage, adoption, and “sexual freedom,” while violently and unfairly hindering their ex-gay peers who seek the same tolerance but are rarely afforded it. Who knows when would their demands ever halt, maybe not before starting to command the legalisation of pedophilia, as we are now seeing.

Liberal Americans and elite Europeans are tricked by them just like the Arab world had been fooled with democracy and peace, while all that exists is submission and unrest. They erroneously think they are helping the LGBT community by defending their destructive rights and banning therapy for those who seek change, when the truth is they are hurting them so awfully, severely, gravely and ignorantly by encouraging a path that would only lead to more depression, addiction, disease, instability, and suicide. Do you really wish such drastic ending to your own children? In case you answer no, then: STOP BEING NAIVE.

Arab Ex-Gays are really “The Gayest” and “The Happiest” amongst all the people struggling with same-sex attractions around the world. They are Christians and Muslims who have a special relationship with One Person in common: “The Virgin Mary.”  They have a distinctive devotion to Her and She makes Herself Visible to them. Do not misunderstand me; She is NOT their Healer but Her Son Is. And just like She Told Him in Cana: “They have no wine,” He would never refuse anything She asks of Him. But first, we must do what He Commands us to do: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

What is love? Love can never be degraded and desecrated to mean just an emotion or mere thrilling feelings. In order to love someone with all your heart, soul, strength and mind, you will need to know what is in your own heart, soul, mind, and also how much strength you have. You get to know yourself, see what is lacking, be aware of your own shortfalls and understand the roots of those deficits. Specialized SSA Psychotherapy and Religious Informed Spiritual Direction are the most helpful methods when used in correlation. Understanding yourself is necessary before you can develop morality, wisdom and discretion. But who needs those virtues and values these days when nobody dares to even speak about them anymore unless they are risking being named traditional, conservative, outdated, and old-fashioned? Those who are silent about social moral degradation or decide to take the decadent side are miserable cowards heading for destruction of not only themselves but of their children and grandchildren!

Arab Ex-Gays are acknowledged with honor and esteem and are looked very high upon within their society. People do not cease to show them admire for the progress, perseverance, strength, and growth they show where many else would fail. One of the many hints for their orientation change is that they start their healing journey and take therapeutic measures at an early age. In contrast, we are now seeing this therapy being foolishly banned for minors in the USA, as if politicians and lawmakers are scientists and know what’s best for youth. In reality, these politicians do not care about youth, but are only advancing their own political objectives.

I thank you God for being born in Lebanon, the only country in the world where laws, regulations, decrees and acts will forever remain moral no matter how hard the western agenda tries to infiltrate it with their evil influences.

Carol Aoun is the Foundress and President of “Mary Help of Mothers,” a Lebanese pro-life non-profit organization that was founded in 2009. As the only pro-life organization of its kind in the Arab world, Carol has been counseling women, facilitating retreats, and helping post-abortion women in their families recover and heal wounds. She also spreads awareness by actively working within the media to educate the public in television documentaries.

Homosexuality by Royal Decree…Long Live Our Gay King!

July 18th, 2013 marked a historic era in the history of the United Kingdom, indeed, in the history of the world. With a royal seal of approval given by Queen Elizabeth II, homosexual marriage has become the law of the English land. Parliament has passed a sweeping national law that allows homosexual men and women to marry members of their own sex.

In the last 50 years since Gay activism became active, there has been one principle, one idea activists have sought to institutionalize the world over. The idea is that homosexuality is inborn in human beings by nature, and as such, is unchangeable. Without the acceptance of this idea, Kings and Queens, Presidents and Prime Ministers, Congresses and churches would never have begun to succeed in passing laws to allow same-sex marriage.

The highly respected and venerable Queen Elizabeth II has apparently conveyed her own belief in the “born-that-way” principle. With her seal of approval, she has indeed entered into a Britannic blunder, the like of which has never been seen over the last 15 English centuries. The land of Shakespeare and The Bible, this emerald of the sea, this blessed plot, this England, the second most historically influential country in western civilization, has become a harbinger of the certainty of the times to come.

gayburgerking6a00d8341c730253ef0105367bb462970c-640wiThe next unarguable step, certain to occur someday very soon, will be the crowning of a Gay British King. He and his, well “King,” will become the royal couple occupying Westminster Castle. If the royal birth of the baby, Prince George, happens to be Gay ,then Queen Elizabeth will, by her own belief system, be obligated to welcome her great-grandchild into the castle, nay, welcome him/her with open arms and prepare for the eventual reign of a Gay monarch and their spouse. This modern royal couple will no doubt attempt to have children in some way. Who knows, maybe by then gender and sexuality will be of no concern whatsoever, and the freedom for men to physically have their own babies might be medically possible?

What a brave new world we are entering as Elizabeth inches nearer her exit from this world. However, when the queen is gone she will not have to worry about the issue, which is typical of 20th century British monarchs who often avoid controversy. She will be gone, and her legacy will take root and flourish. Certainly, a “brave, new world.”

Of course, in the past there were some English Kings who were certainly involved in homosexual relationships. But this is a far different circumstance than a British monarch fully accepting their heirs as future monarchs with their “wife” or  “husband” by their side. Can you imagine the royal tours across the world with the presentation of a Gay King and his spouse? Think it won’t happen? Readers, it must happen, if being Gay is naturally inborn and immutable.

The land of Shakespeare indeed…”What fools these mortals be.”
