Take Away Hope and You Kill a Child: Illinois Advances Hope Killing Legislation

bio picture-2

Voice of the Voiceless Advisory Board Member, Chuck Peters

“The Emperor Wears No Clothes” or “The Emperor Has No Clothes” is often used in political and social contexts for any obvious truth denied by the majority, despite the evidence to their own eyes. This title is most appropriate when discussing the current “debate” over prohibiting minors from receiving Sexual Orientation Change Effort Therapy (SOCE) from licensed mental health practitioners.

The urban myth that has been disseminated among the general populace, and apparently most of the representatives in every capital building in every state of the USA on the topic of homosexuality is:  “Born that way, cannot change.” Yet just about every piece of scientific evidence in the literature proves just the opposite of this 40 year old antiquated statement.

Every professor of human sexuality at any major reputable university will attest to the fact that human sexual orientation is fluid.

In fact, even the former President of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Nicholas Cummings, said under oath that he has treated thousands of homosexuals and they have changed to heterosexuals and are living happy lives!

Moreover, neurologists have known for years that our brains are “plastic” – that is that our brains can form new neural connections as we change and grow throughout our lives.

Furthermore, even the courts have recognized that Ex-gays are now a legally protected class and New York Mayor DiBlasio’s wife recently came out as an Ex-gay!

Yet, these foundational facts of human sexuality have seemed to escape homosexual activist lawyers, homosexual elected officials, or homosexual legal aids, and pretty much any author of a bill to ban SOCE therapy.

I have learned that you can’t have an honest debate about sexual orientation change with a homosexual because of their inherent homosexual bias.

Gay activists in our political systems are hell bent on shaming and stigmatizing anyone who believes in these foundational truths about human sexuality. This homosexual bias perpetrated by elected homosexual activists and has turned into a Jedi mind trick on their heterosexual colleagues and general public.

That’s exactly what my experience has been with nearly every heterosexual state representative I met in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, DC and Illinois.

Once the heterosexuals look at this subject objectively through the eyes of science, they’ll realize that shoving the homosexual agenda down a 13 year old’s throat is not only wrong, it becomes another form of child abuse.  Not perpetrated by society but by the homosexual activists themselves.

This was my experience when I testified against the Child Mental health welfare bill in Illinois this week, which passed the most recent SOCE therapy ban bill with a vote of 9-6.

Lesbian Rep. Kelly M. Cassidy is the sponsor of the ill-conceived “Youth Mental Health Protection Act”. This bill does nothing to protect the mental health of any child except to tell a minor child if you have a homosexual thought or feeling, you need to collapse that into your identity, grab your rainbow flag, and live the rest of your life as a homosexual.

Essentially, this bill is another form of child abuse at the hands of the militant gay activists like Rep. Kelly M. Cassidy. If this bill would have been a law when I was a child I would not be writing this article today. When I was being groomed and molested by my gay Boy Scout master at the age of 11, I was suicidal and confused about my sexuality.  On the one hand, I was receiving all the attention, affirmation, and affection from a pedophile, but on the other hand, he was sexualizing our relationship at the same time and taking advantage of my vulnerability.

Essentially, I felt quintessentially “gay” but knew deep down inside that I wasn’t. If it weren’t for the fact that I was able to receive appropriate mental health treatment for my sexual confusion and suicidality from a licensed professional, I know for a fact that I would have killed myself. I would have killed myself not because I thought I was gay, but that I was in so much unbearable emotional pain as a teenager that I naively thought the only way out was to take my own life.

This bill and others that have been introduced through our country only serve to further increase the suicide rate among our teenagers. If you want to kill a minor child, take away hope. This is what this bill and others just like it have attempted to do.

I was shocked but not surprised when I was told by two of the gay activist attorneys’ who wrote and twisted Washington DC’s Council member Mary Cheh’s arm to sponsor a similar bill to prohibit minor children from receiving mental health treatment for unwanted same sex attraction. During our conversation I told them when I was a teenager I had homosexual feelings but didn’t’ want to be gay. They both agreed with me and said when they were teenagers they didn’t’ want to be gay either and then they went further to say that “no teenager wants to be gay.”

This exactly proves why these child abusive bills should never see the light of day. What business does the state have to intrude on a private therapy session between a kid and his therapist? If a child doesn’t want to be gay let him figure it out with his therapist. The state has no business gagging a therapist from allowing a child to grow up and have a natural family and life the life he/she wants to live.

In Illinois, once I and other ex-gays shared the facts of what SOCE therapy actually is,

that there is not one shred of scientific evidence showing it causes harm, and

that folks like myself who have received SOCE are alive and living the lives that they want, many changed their minds. Previously, all they heard were indoctrination and lies by gay activists. Unfortunately, too many on the committee had already been brainwashed.

However, despite their ignorance, I can proclaim that today I feel more loved now than I ever have in my entire life. I no longer want to kill myself and no longer see myself being stuck in the gay community where I never felt right.

Any cognitive behavior therapist will tell you that what you believe about yourself is what you will manifest in your life. It appears that the militant gay activists are still stuck in the 70’s with the ”I was born this way and I can’t change” mantra. It’s about time the gay community caught up with the times and educate the world to the fact that you can live any life you want, including one where you change sexual orientation.

In the meantime, the lives of our suicidal kids are too precious to be left in their own hands. Let them seek the mental health treatment that may save their lives. I know if my life would have been left in my own hands I would be dead. I pray that the children in Illinois will be as fortunate as me.

SPLC Sued For Extremism, FBI Dumps Them as Resource

A cunning strategist demonstrates his skill against his appointed adversary by undermining his enemy while advancing his own position in the same move.  And what more cruel, envious, cowardly and deceptive tactic to get ahead in the game than by psychological warfare to convince an adversary that his success is a total impossibility while advancing your own position ?

In 2002, former homosexual Richard Weller writes in ‘Confessions of a Former Homosexual’,

“I was 100% gay, now I am 100% recovered…..the media “spin” on homosexuality makes me feel that I can’t stay silent anymore! Like many young gays, I tried to commit suicide because I didn’t think there was a way out. “[1]

Fortunately, Richard did find a way out and is alive today to tell of it.  Like untold numbers of former homosexuals who wished to live in compliance with the natural and written laws of their faith, to avoid the devastating medical consequences of the behavior,  or to simply lead a normal, fruitful life.  If ever there was a truly fundamental right, it is the right to self-determination.

Unfortunately, for those seeking change there are also those who would deny them that right to their own self-determination.  Whether motivated by their shame in a failure to change, a lack of desire to change, negative experiences in attempting to change or for purely political purposes, the homosexual lobby itself leads the charge in denying the right to self-determination in order to advance their own ideology hoping for politically protected legal status based on unproven claims of a physiological basis for homosexuality which would justify such protections.  Even as the American Psychological Association recently updated its official statement based on cumulative research to admit,

“There is no consensus among scientists about the exact reasons that an individual develops a heterosexual, bisexual, gay, or lesbian orientation. Although much research has examined the possible genetic, hormonal, developmental, social, and cultural influences on sexual orientation, no findings have emerged that permit scientists to conclude that sexual orientation is determined by any particular factor or factors.”  ~ American Psychological Association [2]

As the APA faces heated criticism from within and without concerning its methods, in particular its inclusion, exclusion and classification of disorders in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, which now excludes homosexuality, including from experts such as Dr. Allen Frances, professor emeritus at Duke University, former chairman of the DSM-IV task force, who stated clinical trials “have been a pure disaster from start to finish.”  He called the trials a “fiasco” and accuses the American Psychiatric Association of having “lost its competence and credibility.”[3]

Others like former American Psychological Association President Dr. Nicholas Cummings attest to the fact that,

“I know of ‘hundreds’ of homosexuals who changed their orientation” [4]

and untold numbers of former homosexuals stepping forward to testify to their life’s experience, the homosexual lobby continues to bully and intimidate anyone attempting change.

SPLC Anti-ChristianTo actualize their political goals, the homosexual lobby has employed the dubious services of the far left wing Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to punitively pursue and harass sexual change therapy groups through legal action.  In “Michael Ferguson et al v. JONAH et al”, currently making its way through the New Jersey court system, the SPLC charges Jewish sexual orientation change organization JONAH with fraudulent practices because client Michael Ferguson and three compatriots failed to experience change in their sexual orientation, even though no such guarantees are offered by JONAH or any legitimate change therapy practitioner, and accusing them of bizarre therapy practices unheard of in the modern sexual orientation change community.  Like any psychological counseling, patient progress varies individually and is largely determined by one’s own commitment to change.    One plaintiff in the case only attended five sessions before quitting while another had a record of speaking glowingly about his JONAH treatment before being recruited by the SPLC as a potential benefactor to the lawsuit.  Involvement with the homosexual behavior lobby has embarrassed and strained the reputation of the once honorable SPLC noted for its defense of racial minorities in past decades.  In what can only be described as a desperate bid to maintain relevance in a racially modern America, the SPLC has mired itself in the defense of the medically unhealthy[5], and often fluid and unwanted condition of homosexuality.

While political activism in California and New Jersey managed to implement bans on therapists offering treatment for unwanted same-sex attraction, reviews of the science and testimonies in Washington, Virginia and Maryland have resulted rejection of bans on providing therapy to those who desire it.  New Jersey’s ban drew particular attention when the lobby’s primary witness was investigated and discovered to have lied about attending therapy, the existence of the supposed therapist and harsh treatment techniques under the non-existent therapist.  Both legitimate therapists and the Ohio Secretary of State, where the treatment was to have been provided, verified that no such therapy or therapist exists.[6]  Meanwhile, the SPLC’s reputation continues to suffer the deeper it wades into the mire the homosexual lobby’s deception has created by naming any organization offering sexual orientation therapy or any organization maintaining Christian ethics towards homosexual behavior as “hate groups”.  As a result of their unscientific and blind leftist ideological attacks, officials in two states have called for investigations into SPLC activities and methods.  In Hawaii, officials have filed an ethics complaint and accused the SPLC of bribing teachers with $250 payments to adopt SPLC lessons attacking Christians and conservative groups into their lesson plans.[7][8]  At the same time, legislators in Virginia have taken the SPLC to court over their smearing of conservative and religious groups via their “hate group” label due to their pro-family and pro-marriage positions.  The court has subpoenaed “all written criteria, guidelines, bylaws or rules used by Southern Poverty Law Center to designate organizations or groups as ‘hate groups’ from the inception of the Southern Poverty Law Center to the present date.”[9]

Probably most damaging and embarrassing for the SPLC was the recent peer-reviewed study by North Texas University identifying the SPLC as being little more than left wing hacks by displaying the bigotry and “hate” which they are accusing Christian and pro-family groups of participating in.[10]  As our scientific understanding of homosexuality advances and an increasing number of ex-gays and successful sexual orientation change therapists come to public awareness, the SPLC seems to have made an odd choice in choosing the oppressing side.

These activities may have played a role in the unceremonious dumping of the SPLC and the Anti-Defamation League as resources by the FBI who did so without comment, a devastating blow to their validity and significance.  The SPLC’s antagonism was largely blamed for a targeted shooting spree at the Family Research Council headquarters by a homosexualist supporter in August of 2012.[11]

As for those choosing to change their lives, including their sexual orientation, it remains their choice alone.

Maryland Change Therapy Bill Withdrawn, Minnesota Bill Dead On Arrival

Maryland and Minnesota Become the Third and Fourth States to Reject Change Therapy Bills

Delegate Cardin - bs-gm-gay-conversion-therapy-bill-withdrawn-20-001

Md. Delegate Jon Cardin at a Press Conference March 14 to Withdraw HB 91

Last Friday, March 14, 2014, Maryland Delegate Jon Cardin held a joint press conference with Equality Maryland to announce the death of HB 91, the bill that was proposing to ban Sexual Orientation Change Effort (SOCE) therapy for minors. While Cardin claimed that the reason the bill was withdrawn was due to the existing regulatory oversight protections that are already in place to protect youth from “harmful conversion therapy,” the real reason was because of the bill’s lack of support within his own party. In reality, the unconstitutional notion of taking away the rights of individuals with unwanted same-sex attractions did not sit well with Maryland legislators, and with Cardin engaged in the race for Attorney General, he was not about to take a chance that this bill would fail. The timing of the press conference (Friday) was also indicative that Cardin wanted very little attention on the withdraw of this bill.

The Baltimore Sun, the only major news outlet that even picked up the story, buried it in on their website on Friday evening where stories go to die. You can read the entire article by clicking here.

In the press conference, Cardin said he would work with the state licensing boards in Maryland to ensure that minors who are subjected to “harmful conversion therapy” have every avenue to file a complaint:

“Minors or anyone advocating on their behalf can file a complaint with a board, triggering a vigorous investigation . . . if the investigation uncovers proof that a licensed health care professional violated the standard of care, then the board has an array of regulatory tools to keep this from happening again . . . Delegate Cardin and Equality Maryland are confident that the existing regulatory framework provides a precise tool to protect minors from this harmful therapy, and we will work together and with other advocates to ensure that the process for filing complaints against anyone who engages in these practices is transparent and widely disseminated.”

In other news, tomorrow marks the last day for a bill to advance in the Minnesota legislature, with House File 1906/Senate File 1727 failing to get a committee hearing. According to an anonymous source, Democratic leadership was unwilling to push this bill through the legislature without strong bi-partisan support. After a heavy education campaign from ex-gays in Minnesota, this bill is DEAD ON ARRIVAL.

Clearly, the politicians in Minnesota are not interested in such a divisive, unconstitutional bill like the proposed change therapy bill. This now makes four bills in a row that have been defeated: Virginia, Washington, Maryland, and Minnesota.

Next up, Illinois will have a committee hearing on Monday, March 24 on the proposed bill to ban SOCE therapy for minors. If you live or know of anyone willing to testify against this destructive legislation on Monday, please contact us so we can put you in touch with the coalition fighting against this bill in Illinois.

Finally, click here to watch a recent Sky News segment that includes Christopher Doyle and a client of the International Healing Foundation that has experienced sexual orientation change. The segment focuses on the recent legislation proposed in Virginia, which was defeated.

Setting the Record Straight on ‘Gay Conversion’ Therapy for Minors

As a response to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals’ refusal to hear an appeal over the 2012 California law prohibiting Sexual Orientation Change Effort (SOCE) therapy for minors, it has been open season for anti-therapy activists. To compliment existing laws in New Jersey and the Golden State, legislation has also been introduced in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington, Ohio, Washington, D.C., Florida, Minnesota, New York, Maryland, Hawaii, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Pundits across the political spectrum are anticipating more laws to come in 2014.

A February 16 article in The Washington Times predicted that such laws would likely follow the path of states legalizing gay marriage, and perhaps even pave the way to a national ban if anti-ex-gay advocates were to gain more power on the federal level, while a February 12 editorial in the New York Times suggested that a wiser path would be for “victims” to use legal measures to quell the “deceptive practices” of those who offer SOCE therapy. After all, it’s a well-known fact that such therapy for minors has been “proven” to be “ineffective” and “harmful.”

However, recent legislative efforts by activists in Virginia and Washington have failed, and a hearing in Maryland on similar legislation was cancelled, partly because the lies and half-truths of activists are catching up to them. In Washington, a witness testifying in a January committee hearing said that a licensed therapist forced a child to watch pornography while in an ice bath so that the client would associate sexual arousal with pain. However, when questioned after the hearing, the woman refused to provide the name of the therapist and when it happened; nor was she willing to do any research to help uncover whether, if it had in fact happened, it was a licensed therapist.

In a senate hearing in February, a representative of the Washington Department of Health, which has jurisdiction over professional licensing and fields approximately 10,000 complaints a year, said that the current staff has 11 years of institutional knowledge and no one was aware of a single complaint alleging that a licensed therapist had attempted to coerce someone into not being gay.

Transgender activist Brielle Goldani testifying in March, 2013 in front of the New Jersey Senate. Goldani alleged to have been electroshocked at a “conversion therapy torture camp” in Ohio in 1997

This story sounds eerily similar to the disaster witnessed in New Jersey last year, when transgender activist Brielle Goldani claimed to have been sent to a “conversion therapy torture camp” in Ohio in 1997. Goldani alleged to have been electroshocked at the month-long “True Directions” camp in an attempt to make him, now her, straight. Yet, an investigation published at revealed that the entire testimony was a fraud, taken directly out of a Hollywood production starring drag queen RuPaul.

Tall tales of “therapy torture” aside, the larger problem with this legislation is the foundation of facts, or lack thereof, to substantiate such prohibitions. While anti-therapy advocates assert that “rigorous studies” have found SOCE therapy to be “harmful” and “ineffective” for minors, there is no scientific foundation for this assertion. To date, there have been no outcome-based studies published in peer-reviewed journals that have followed minors undergoing SOCE therapy. Rather, these advocates have used sociological data to argue that efforts to change should be made illegal.

For example, an often-cited study is Ryan et al. (2009), which found family rejection to be a predictor of negative outcomes in White and Latino lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) young adults. This research found that LGB young adults who reported higher levels of family rejection during adolescence were more likely to report having attempted suicide, experience high levels of depression, use illegal drugs, and engage in unprotected sexual intercourse, compared with peers from families that reported no or low levels of family rejection.

While family rejection of gay-identified youth may indeed be a risk factor for negative outcomes, the aforementioned study did not examine outcomes of youth who voluntarily underwent SOCE therapy for unwanted same-sex attractions.

In my clinical experience, I have worked with roughly 50-75 adolescents (mostly young men) who have been distressed by homosexual desires that did not align with their values and life goals. In the vast majority of cases, the youth who entered therapy did not identify themselves as gay, but rather, believed they were inherently heterosexual with unwanted homosexual desires. For these clients, underlying issues for the development of same-sex attractions are identified and resolved over the course of treatment, with outcomes typically consisting of a reduction of homosexual feelings, along a continuum, and an increase in heterosexual feelings.

These clinical outcomes are consistent with epidemiological data that has found homosexual feelings in adolescence to be fluid, rather than fixed. Longitudinal studies by Savin-Williams & Ream (2007) and Ott et al. (2011) following large samples of youth found that seventy-five and sixty-six percent of adolescents, respectively, who initially identified their sexual orientation as “homosexual” or “unsure,” reported exclusive heterosexual attraction at follow-up. In contrast, only two percent of youth who identified a heterosexual orientation in the Savin-Williams & Ream study reported a homosexual orientation at follow-up.

While most people would agree that forcibly subjecting gay-identified youth to undergo therapy to change sexual orientation is wrong, that does not mean the state should remove the option for youth (especially those who experience homosexual feelings due to sexual abuse) to explore the origins of their same-sex attractions and consider whether they want to pursue therapy that affirms their self-identified and preferred heterosexual identity.

While the gay activist attorneys at the Southern Poverty Law Center may find SOCE therapy to be at odds with their political agenda of shutting down discourse on homosexuality, they cannot bully their way into redefining the nature of sexual orientation, which according to renowned sex researcher Fritz Klein, is a “dynamic, multi-variable process” that is composed of sexual and non-sexual variables which differ over time. These variables include sexual attraction, fantasy, and behavior, as well as emotional and social preference, lifestyle choice, and self-identification.

Simply stated, an individual’s sexual and gender identity is up to the individual to decide, and is subject to change throughout the lifespan. In fact, Facebook agrees insomuch as they now allow users to choose from over 50 sexual and gender identities. At any point, individuals can change their identity based on how they feel. For example, when I was age thirteen, I might have identified myself as a homosexual. Ten years later, I would have described myself as a heterosexual. This past Saturday, I classified myself as gender non-conforming, but on Sunday, cisgender felt right.

It is troubling that professors of queer studies at major universities discuss the fluidity of sexual orientation while celebrating the sexual freedom in the gay and lesbian community, but when someone suggests that homosexuality might not be immutable for all, feathers get ruffled. The truth is, some individuals can change who they love, and who they are attracted to – my experience of change from homosexual to heterosexual proves this – and today, I am married to a beautiful woman and we have three children.

But don’t take my word for it; ask New York Mayor Bill De Blasio’s wife, who was once a lesbian. When queried as to how she went from being a lesbian to falling in love with Bill, writer and poet Chirlane McCray said, “By putting aside the assumptions I had about the form and package my love would come in. By letting myself be as free as I felt when I went natural.”

Just in case you were wondering, no reports have surfaced that indicate McCray was tortured or forced into this marriage. But then again, we’re barely into 2014, and there is plenty of time for activists to make up stories that go unchallenged in the mainstream media (Note: this article was originally published on March 13, 2014 at:

UK High Court Orders Full Disclosure from Mayor of London Over Ex-Gay Discrimination

not-gay post gayAt the end of January Lord Dyson, the Master of the Rolls (the second most senior judge in England) made a historic ruling concerning a bus advert: Not gay! Ex-gay, post-gay and proud! Get over it!

For those unaware of the sage this advert was due to run on buses in London, on behalf of CORE Issues Trust, in response to the Stonewall adverts: Some People are gay. Get over it! but was suddenly banned by Transport for London because of it supposedly being “offensive,” despite it having passed the censors at the Advertising Authority. While the High Court had not overturned the ban it found that the original Stonewall advert should not have been run because it was offensive, a ruling that Stonewall ignored when they reran these adverts before Christmas in 2013. Thankfully the Court of Appeal agreed that the Stonewall advert was offensive, despite Transport for London disagreeing.

But the Court of Appeal went further in ordering the case to be reviewed again by the High Court because evidence was submitted that showed the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, had ordered Transport for London to pull the advert to prevent it becoming an issue in his campaign for re-election. Just as importantly the ruling states that ex-gays have protection from discrimination on exactly the same grounds as homosexuals. This is a major step forward as this prevents ex-gays who speak out from being discriminated by employers, and should allow for ex-gays and those who want to pursue that path to gain access to suitable therapies.

This case is still ongoing. Now back at the High Court, where Mrs Justice Lang, the judge who heard the original High Court case, has stated that she is not happy with the account of what happened from either the Mayor of London or his office and has ordered them to provide her with full copies of the relevant emails and documents and also ordered Boris Johnson, Guto Harri (Johnson’s then Director of Communications), and Sir Peter Hardy (Commissioner for Transport for London) to provide witness statements with the possibility that they may be called to give accounts of themselves under oath in court.

Despite this case, the battle for equality for ex-gays goes on with efforts to close the path for those who want to pursue sexual orientation change going through Parliament, as well as the various “professional bodies” banning their members from offering what research and experience shows to be a safe and effective therapy.
